There has been a long term, lack of qualified candidates in North America. As the demand for restaurant managers continues to exceed the talent base, the opportunities for qualified candidates grows, so don’t make these easy-to-fix job hunting mistakes.

The current problem faced by hospitality recruitment firms is an overload of people who want the job, but do not know how to market their abilities. In this article, we will discuss methods of promoting yourself so Human Resources will value your resume.

Job Hunting Mistakes- LinkedIn

It doesn’t matter what career path you are on, if you are not on LinkedIn then you will never be taken seriously for an upper management job. But you cannot just post your profile. This is a long-term marketing plan that needs to be started long before you decide to leave your current job.

If you draw attention at your job interview, then the interviewer will have several things they will check on LinkedIn, if they haven’t already.

  • People: Choose your contacts carefully. You are judged by the company you keep. Do not fill your contact list with students and friends, even if they are in the same industry. Link yourself to professors, employers, and businesses. When selecting these, try to focus on ones who have accomplishments. Also, look for people who actively answer questions and contribute to the community.
  • Articles: An article online expands your resume. A peer-reviewed article on a topic that is not ‘evergreen’ shows you can have an original thought. If your interviewer does use LinkedIn then you are expanding your resume. This is a way to show which topics are your strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Longevity: When I review LinkedIn I am looking at dates. I like to see activity, but I’m more interested in seeing who has been active for 2 or 3+ years. This reveals intent. Of course, many people will start marketing themselves when they are looking for a job. People with the ‘Mindset of a Manager’ will never stop marketing themselves. They know they will be looking for a job in the future, so they will not stop posting their successes. This tells me that they are committed. If they are committed to themselves, they are more likely to be committed to their new career.

Job Hunting Mistakes- Online Learning

The next thing I want to see is that they are hooked up with one of the short course, online learning organizations like Lynda or Udemy. This tells me that they solve their problems. They prepare themselves for projects, and/or they update their skills.

This is especially important if I am looking at a manager over 30. Even 5 years out of school can make your skills outdated.

It also tells me that you don’t expect your employer to foot the bill for your education. It is expensive training a new manager. Needing to train the basics, like how to use office software, can make or break a candidate.
