Managing up is an important skill. Employees must work on the relationship with their boss, by managing interactions and getting the job done well in addition to doing the job at hand. If workers can make their boss love them, they may reap the benefit of raises, promotions later on, so the extra effort is usually worth it.

Since February features Valentine’s Day, we thought it would be a good idea to share some tips on how to make your boss “love” you—or at least love your work. Here’s how to make your boss love you in 3…2…1…

Why Do You Want Your Boss to Love Your Work?

If you want to succeed in your job, you must succeed with your boss. If your boss loves you, every day will be a little easier. You won’t have big conflicts with your boss that can be both distracting and career limiting. Improving your relationship with your boss requires a commitment to make his or her job easier. Sometimes it will be hard, but it will be worth it. Here are seven steps you can take right now to help improve the relationship with your boss.

  1. Concentrate on the basics by performing simple tasks with no guidance or support from your manager. Use your initiative to take control of what you can and accomplish what’s needed every day without constantly being prompted by your boss. This will allow him or her to focus on more pressing details requiring a manager’s attention.
  2. Be productive and deliver results to stay on your manager’s good side. If you always produce your best work, you’ll make your boss and the team look good.
  3. Always do what you promise and follow through on tasks. It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver, but generally, do what you need to do to get the job done.
  4. Share your knowledge with other workers and help them succeed. Not only will you build goodwill with the coworkers around you, but your boss will also appreciate your efforts to teach and lead others.
  5. Understand management and organizational priorities. Acknowledge that you understand the situation and will do your best to help the team reach its goals. Adapt to any changes that change priorities and be willing to roll with it.
  6. Go above and beyond what is expected, Accept new challenges, learn new things, and excel in the role you’ve been given. Employers will take notice when you exceed expectations.
  7. Educate yourself and invest in your knowledge. Take advantage of any training or educational opportunities to learn new skills that you can apply at work. Employers pay attention to workers that seek to improve themselves. In addition to learning new skills, it will mark you as an overachiever and go-getter.

Improving your relationship with your boss will help you advance your career. Employees that manage the relationship with their boss work hard to put their best foot forward by excelling in their role but also by getting along with coworkers and their employer.
