Position Overview

The Director of Liquor is responsible for managing all aspects of sales and merchandising for the liquor department across multiple grocery store and affiliated locations. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of beer, wine, spirits, market trends, and customer preferences. Collaborating with senior leadership, the Director will establish a clear vision and strategy for the department, ensuring the effective execution of these plans at both corporate and store levels.


Essential Job Duties

  • Sales Strategy: Design and implement strategies to achieve sales targets and grow the liquor category’s market share.
  • Merchandising Plans: Develop and manage merchandising strategies that align with customer needs and company objectives.
  • Product Assortment: Ensure product selections reflect customer preferences and market trends, with regular updates to maintain relevance.
  • Pricing Strategy: Execute competitive pricing and promotional initiatives aimed at boosting sales and market competitiveness.
  • Supplier Relations: Build strong relationships with suppliers and vendors to secure reliable deliveries, competitive pricing, and optimal assortments.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee inventory levels to balance product availability with waste control.
  • Market Analysis: Monitor and analyze sales performance, market trends, and consumer behaviors to identify growth and innovation opportunities.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to all laws, regulations, and company policies regarding the sale and marketing of alcoholic beverages.
  • Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams and store management to support organizational programs and initiatives.
  • Culture Advocacy: Embody and promote the organization’s mission, values, and guiding principles in all activities.


Qualifications

  • Strong expertise and enthusiasm for beer, wine, and spirits.
  • Proven leadership and the ability to effectively manage and drive results through teams.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Advanced problem-solving, negotiating, and analytical skills.
  • Strategic thinker with a focus on developing long-term plans and innovative strategies.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining professional relationships internally and externally.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Education and Experience

  • 3–5 years of managerial or leadership experience in the retail liquor industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.


Work Environment & Demands

  • Frequent travel required between store locations, including potential for neighbor island, mainland, and international trips for training and research.
  • Flexible scheduling, including availability on weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Comfortable working in both office and in-store environments.


Mental and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to analyze detailed data and make timely decisions based on the information available.
  • Must be able to adapt quickly to changes and stay informed of trends in the liquor industry.
  • Comfortable working on detailed, intricate tasks or repetitive activities for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting and moving of merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent focus and communication skills, including public speaking to various audiences ranging from frontline employees to senior leadership.
