Job Description

Pastry Chef Opportunity

We are hiring a skilled and creative baker to lead our established baking program. Our location has been home to a bakery for nearly five decades, and the surrounding community's appreciation for quality pastry runs deep.

You will step into a well-organized system built by a veteran pastry chef who is moving on after four years with us. This system is yours to learn and, over time, shape around your own strengths and interests, working closely with the owner to craft a pastry case that highlights seasonality, fruit, and aromatics.

Our ideal candidate values independence while also understanding their role as part of a larger team. As the morning lead, you will set the tone in the kitchen, oversee incoming deliveries, and keep front-of-house staff informed on daily offerings. This is a pivotal leadership position within our organization.

Who You'll Work With

  • Baker's Assistant
  • Production Lead for our affiliated preserves company
  • Kitchen Cooks
  • Owner

You will manage one Assistant Baker and report directly to the Owner.

The Role

  • Overseeing daily production of biscuits and 14 to 18 additional baked goods, including tea cakes, danishes, cookies, scones, brioche, and potentially croissants
  • Baking gluten-free bread on a monthly basis for kitchen use
  • Testing and developing new products for the pastry case
  • Coordinating closely with savory cooks
  • Aligning output with seasonal ingredients and themes

What Success Looks Like

  • A baking program that serves a wide range of customers, from those with grain-free or gluten-free needs to those who prefer less sweetness, alongside traditional bakeshop favorites
  • A communicative, upbeat work environment that brings out the best in individuals and the team alike
  • Minimal food waste through thoughtful planning and execution

What We're Looking For

  • A genuine love of learning, whether through self-study or collaboration with colleagues
  • A broad skill set, from laminated doughs to a curiosity for alternative flours and sweeteners
  • An interest in working with aromatics, herbs, and spices
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • A team-first mindset grounded in a strengths-based approach
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • The ability to multitask efficiently while maintaining attention to detail
  • A strong sense of community

Our baking influences include Charlie Dunmire, Nigel Slater, Pam Corbin, Tandem, Thalia Ho, Camilla Wynne, Magnus Nilsson, Claudia Roden, Aran Goyoaga, and Fany Gerson.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly wage plus tips, with total compensation ranging from $58,000 to $70,000 annually
  • Two weeks of paid time off, increasing to three weeks after two years
  • Employee CSA
  • Staff meals
  • Employee discount
  • Seasonal bonus

Ready to bring your craft and creativity to a well-loved culinary program? We would love to hear from you.
