About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the maintenance, care, and management of our golf course. This critical leadership role ensures the course meets the highest standards of quality, playability, and environmental stewardship. The ideal candidate should have in-depth knowledge of California regulations surrounding chemical use and environmental compliance, as well as proven expertise in managing teams, budgets, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Course Maintenance and Management
- Oversee the daily maintenance of the golf course, including turf grass health, landscaping, and irrigation systems.
- Develop and implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to monitor and control pests effectively.
- Ensure compliance with all California laws and regulations regarding the use and application of chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers.
- Manage the procurement, storage, and safe application of chemicals in accordance with California's environmental standards.
- Maintain the course's playability standards while focusing on aesthetics and sustainable practices.
Team Leadership and Development
- Recruit, train, and manage a team of grounds staff to deliver high-quality results.
- Foster a positive working environment and provide ongoing training in safety, equipment handling, and best practices.
- Assign tasks effectively to ensure efficient use of labor and resources.
Compliance and Sustainability
- Ensure compliance with all state and local environmental regulations, particularly regarding water conservation and chemical usage.
- Develop and maintain robust schedules for water and chemical use, prioritizing sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
- Implement innovative practices to reduce environmental impact and enhance conservation efforts.
Operations and Budget Management
- Prepare and manage an annual budget for golf course maintenance, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Source and manage vendor relationships for equipment, chemicals, and maintenance supplies.
- Develop long-term capital improvement plans for course enhancements.
- Maintain comprehensive records of maintenance schedules, chemical applications, and compliance documentation.
Communication and Collaboration
- Work closely with the General Manager and other relevant departments to align maintenance efforts with course goals and events.
- Communicate effectively with the club’s membership to address concerns and provide updates on course conditions.
Required Qualifications
- California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) or California Qualified Applicator License (QAL).
- Proven knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and regulations.
- Familiarity with California's environmental and water conservation standards related to golf course management.
- Demonstrated experience in overseeing golf course maintenance and operations.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to manage and inspire teams.
- Proficiency in budget management and financial planning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred
- Advanced understanding of irrigation systems and water resource management.
- Certification through Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) or a related professional body preferred
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in golf course maintenance settings.
