Background & Experience

How Peta Evaluates Talent
I want to hear someone talk about their team before they talk about themselves. I ask a lot of questions about the day-to-day: how they handled a bad shift, how their staff felt about working for them, and what they were actually accountable for versus what their title implied. I’m good at reading people, and I can usually tell pretty quickly whether someone’s experience and personality are actually going to fit with a client’s concept.
Peta’s Market Perspective
Kansas and Missouri are both competitive right now for all levels of restaurant management. Good people have options, so employers who move slowly tend to lose out on the candidates they want most. I also think smaller markets get overlooked. There’s real talent outside of Kansas City and St. Louis, and part of my job is making sure those candidates get seen too.
Advice
For employers: Take the time upfront to define exactly who you’re looking for, the experience, skills, and personality that would actually succeed in this role, while staying open to candidates who don’t check every box on paper.
For candidates: Research the company before the interview, dress professionally, bring positive energy, and always be on time.
In Peta’s Words
“Keep it simple, stay positive, and good things tend to follow.”
